SALTSTRAUMEN

The World`s Strongest Tidal Current culminates every 6 hours when great qantities of salt water, approching 400mill m3 in volume, force their way through the 3 km long and 150 meter wide strait between the Saltenfjord and the Skjerstadfjord, at speeds of up to 20 knots. in conjunction with this , vortices (whirlpool) are formed, reaching proportions of up to 10 metres in depth. An Anglers`s Paradise Saltstraumen has achieved world -wide acclaim as an Eldorado for anglers, with good fishing from both shore and on board boats. The current brings along plenty of plankton as bait, helping to maintain the abundant shoals of, among other species, saithe, cod, wolf fish, rose fish and halibut. Saithe, also known as coley, is the local speciality, and the world`s biggest saithe ever caught with a rod (22,7 kg) was caught in Saltstraumen. This record-breaking saithe is on display at the Saltstraumen Experience. The Saltstraumen Experience focuses on history, culture and every day life in and around Saltstraumen in the form of exhibitions, models, and a sophisticated multimedia show. The Saltstraumen experience also includes a souvenir shop with locally and regionally produced handicraft, a cafe and marvellous gardens with rambling trails and barbecue spots overlooking the Saltstraumen strait.
